Paused. Now what?

mug with pauseOK, you have hit life’s pause button…now what? Where do you start…what do you start?

Let us look to God’s Word to find His “Sabbath rest instruction sheets.” One primary specific teaching on Sabbath rest teaches us our personal retreat time (Sabbath rest time) is to be used to remember who God is and what He has done; remember how you have seen God reveal His many Names to you! When has God been your Deliverer, your Healer, your Strong Tower or any of the 700+ Names He exhibits in Scripture?

Deuteronomy 5 15 says, “Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God delivered you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day.’

Our purpose in resting with God is to remember God’s amazing revelation of Himself through His works, His Word, His miracles and power! As we remember how God has revealed Himself, our natural response is worship! In addition to driving us to worship, reflecting on what God has done and who He is firmly bolsters our future faith!

The second Biblical purpose for Sabbath is found Exodus 20:11, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. Here, God refers back to Creation where man and God rested together…we often think this “rest” is used as we would think about resting up from being overwhelmed by our work if we had created the world…but let’s explore further.

God is God, He spoke everything into existence up to the point He created man; Man was only one day old and hadn’t done any work yet (such as working the garden, naming the animals or looking for a suitable helpmate)…neither one of them was physically tired! If this is so, why was there a “need” to rest?

This God ordained and God blessed time of divine rest was used as a time where God and man could rest TOGETHER so God could make Adam (man) complete. This “rest’ was specifically created so God could use it as a time for God to prepare man (Adam) for all that He had planned for him…so part of our spending time in the presence of God is to allow God to prepare us for what He has ahead for us!

WOW, the purpose of Sabbath rest and personal retreat is simply this:

  • Remember all God has done and who He is
  • Worship Him and bolstering our faith
  • Let Him fill and prepare us for what He has planned

And the coolest thing of all…God wants so badly to spend uninterrupted time with us that He provides in advance for our needs so we can hang out with Him! But…that is next week…
